My Beloved

Love Tree by AngelMy Beloved,

Thank you for opening your heart and life to me…I treasure our special time this morning – your tears. You are a sweet and dear sister…I hope that I can handle your heart gently…I wish that I could…I’ve dropped it so many times…too many times…but there is one that will never abandon it…He is the one to run to – finding your deepest fears calmed…shelter in the midst of the raging winds and peace in the center of long uncertainty.

Thanks for being faithful, loyal and loving (1 Corinthians 13:1-13). You are the Spring in my Winter…the warm sun in my isolated cold. You are, indeed, God’s greatest gift to me. I wish I knew that more often…I wish that I lived it. God help me to hold her heart…to value it above all things…yes just things…of no value compared to her heart. Amen.

Love Forever & Ever.

 Your Husband,

John

“Divided by Faith”

Reconciliation

Reconciliation

I recently read Michael Emerson’s and Christian Smith’s book; Divided by Faith – Evangelical Religion and the Problem of Race in America. I resonated with Emerson’s conclusion that evangelicals tend to live and thrive in the land of the urgent. Evangelicals revel in the activism of the imperative, crusade, rescue and therefore have little time to reflect inward and think through processes and systems that contribute to systemic societal ills – like racism. As I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to appreciate the slower and more contemplative approach – before taking action. Emerson quotes Mark Noll in, The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind, effectively stating; “The evangelical ethos is activist, populist, pragmatic and utilitarian. It allows little space for broader or deeper intellectual effort because it is dominated by the urgency of the moment.” (171). Emerson also quotes N.K.Clifford’s poignant take on the evangelical mind; “The Evangelical Protestant mind has never relished complexity. Indeed its crusading genius, whether in religion or politics, has always tended toward an oversimplification of issues and the substitution of critical analysis and serious reflection for inspiration and zeal.” (171)

Earthquake Felt in Wheaton and Carol Stream, IL

Planet Earth

Planet Earth

I was awakened this morning by rattling windows, a shaking bed, and rumbling sound. I rolled over in bed and ask my wife; “What is that?” Disoriented I thought the washing machine was out of balance…slamming terribly out of control, but then the windows started rattling; it was then that I realized we were experiencing an earthquake. Later in the morning I found out that the epicenter was located near Sycamore, Illinois – approximately 30 miles from my house. Although only a 3.8 magnitude quake I was amazed at the power it yielded; I can only imagine the terror people in Haiti felt at their 7.0 magnitude earthquake.
