Giving to pan-handlers can always be a tricky task...trying to discern what the money is going to be used for etc. In this case the guy was sincerely in need -- his whole family was. Offering him the option to eat as opposed to cash helped clarify the real need. I'm not so disciplined in my giving, but I'm ususally broke enough that I am usually not able to give more than a small amount of change anyway.
