Blessings Don’t Buoy

by on May.22, 2009, under Spiritual Formation

Have you ever felt kept afloat by possessions, relationships, ambition? I’ve often grasped at many things in life to help me gain a sense of significance or to avoid the sinking feeling that life often splashes upon us.  Today I was struck by the simple truth that blessings are nice but they don’t have the ability to keep me propped up for the long haul. I appreciate the blessings but ultimately it’s the one who Blesses that keeps me from drowning.  I stumbled upon a scrap piece of paper today in a second hand shop; the scribble thereon does a good job at summing up my thoughts.

“Don’t underestimate the need for significance. The more we know God, not just about him, the more we discover our true identity. As we begin to comprehend the love he has for us, our sense of significance is greatly enhanced.”

How ironic that a seemingly insignificant, lost piece of paper would confirm my thoughts for the day – “Blessings Don’t Buoy”.
